at SUNSET
A fun night of free surf films begins as the sun goes down over
Hanalei Bay on Sunday May 7th at the Hanalei Community
Center. After the Pinetree's Longboard Contest, 4 local
independent filmmakers will host an outdoor Surf Movie Night
featuring the World Premier of "The World Recording to Will," by
Hanalei's Will Winneguth. The new Down the Road Again film
project follows a 5 week holiday through Australia and New
Zealand dedicated to chasing waves, surf contests, and anything
other than work. The Kauai-boy down under offers up the scenic
and cityscape, wildlife,  wild local music, and wild surf and
skateboarding.

The four film makers bring 4 different styles of film making to this special event. Each style reflects a
departure from earlier surf film styles, which frequently offered little more than slash and burn sequences of
wave, after wave, after wave.

The festivities begin at dark with "Brady's World," a 30 minute film distinctly Wainihan. Brady Cushwood
goes deep into the Wainiha Underground and brings us the true life sense of place that gets lost in a lot of
“epic adventures” put out by the big studios.

At 8:00 the band C.R.S. plays a one hour set while the highlights of the Pinetrees Contest blazes
across the big screen.  Clips of the two day contest will be captured by Joel Guy, in a "make
Movies or Die" - no edit film style.  The established film maker pushes the limits of a local
mainland craze to write, shoot, and edit, a short film in a weekend. Guy takes this one step
further by demonstrating split second decision making, tight shooting, and knowing how to
anticipate where to capture the action.

At 8:00 pm Cheyne's Surf Expo offers a unique water perspective shot by Kauai’s own UCSB film student,
Cheyne Tasic.  Cheyne uses the full pallet of film making effects to bring us a fluid vision of the North Shore,
and a few of Santa Barbara’s infamous right hand breaks. Local surfers include Miguel Martinez, Dustin
Barca, Roy Powers, and the Irons Brothers.

The one hour “World Recording to Will,” finishes out the nights' entertainment as a step back in time to the
travel logs made famous by surf film pioneers Bud Brown.

The whole event is free of charge with the support of the local businesses that have made this event
possible. Sponsors include Kai Kane, Polynesia Cafe, Bali Hai Photo Co., Approved Mortgage, Ching Young
Village Shopping Center, Tropical Taco, and Hanalei Music and Video.   Food, shave Ice, and soft drinks will
be available from The Waipa Foundation and the Hawaii Ocean Film Festival. This is a drug and alcohol
free event. No coolers.  For more info call 826-4581
